Welcome to Semester 2 and Qtr 3!

Dear House of Dragons Community,

Welcome to Semester 2 and Quarter 3! We were excited to welcome our students back and are proud to share that DJMS had a strong first week returning from break. While it was a great start, now is the time to refocus, reset expectations, and move forward with intention.

Quarter 3 is the most important learning season of the school year. This quarter sets the foundation for student success on state assessments and prepares students for the final stretch of the academic year. As we enter this critical period, we are asking for your continued partnership to help us reach our shared goals.

Student success is strongest when there is a clear and consistent connection between school and home. With your support, we can ensure students remain focused, engaged, and accountable throughout the semester. We kindly ask for your assistance with the following:
  • Ensure daily attendance and punctuality
  • Being present every day matters. Instruction builds daily, and missing school can create learning gaps that are difficult to recover.
  • Ensure students bring their laptops and chargers daily
  • Technology is an essential instructional tool at DJMS, and students must come prepared to engage in lessons each day.
  • Model and reinforce positive behavior
  • Please continue to encourage students to make responsible choices, show respect to others, and take ownership of their actions.
  • Monitor Mathia progress and completion
  • Mathia is a required component of our math curriculum. Regular monitoring at home helps reinforce expectations and accountability.
  • Encourage a growth mindset
  • Learning takes effort, perseverance, and resilience. At DJMS, we believe #LearningIsRequired, and our students are expected to push through challenges while continuing to grow. Our Dragons proudly Breathe F.I.R.E.

Quarter 3 is a season of focus, effort, and commitment. With your continued support, we are confident that our students will rise to the challenge and achieve success. Also, please read the important information below outlining the new dismissal procedures at DJMS.

Thank you for your partnership and trust in DJMS. We look forward to a strong and productive semester together.

With F.I.R.E. & Gratitude,

Student Services Updates:

DJMS Policies

Transparency: Always!

At this time, many students are not completing their Mathia assignments as scheduled, both during the school day and at home. Despite our teachers working tirelessly to provide students with structured time and support to complete Mathia at school, distractions during and after school continue to impact student progress.

Mathia is a critical part of our math curriculum. It is the online, adaptive practice component of Carnegie Learning that provides students with personalized math instruction based on their individual needs. Mathia allows students to:
  • Practice math skills independently
  • Receive immediate feedback
  • Build confidence and mastery of grade-level standards
  • Close learning gaps through targeted practice

Simply put, Mathia is how students strengthen their math skills outside of direct instruction. It is similar to practice for a sport—students cannot improve or perform well without consistent practice.

Currently, math is our weakest academic area as a school, and if we are serious about improving student achievement, we must give full force to closing our math gaps. This cannot happen without consistent Mathia completion.

While teachers are doing everything possible during the school day, success also depends on support at home. We ask families to:
  • Monitor Mathia completion regularly
  • Encourage students to use their time wisely at home
  • Limit distractions until Mathia work is completed
  • Reinforce that Mathia is required, not optional

Completing Mathia during the school day or at home is non-negotiable and essential for student success. Together, we can ensure our students receive the practice they need to grow and succeed in math.

Safety

Student Supervision & Safety Expectations

New Dismissal Procedures- Begin Monday, January 12, 2026

We would like to inform you that DJMS will be implementing updated dismissal procedures. Please be assured that this change does not impact parents or parent pick-up procedures in any way.

To strengthen student supervision and overall safety during dismissal, DJMS will follow a staggered release exit format at the end of the school day. This allows staff to better monitor student movement and ensure a smooth, orderly dismissal.

The new dismissal times will be as follows:
  • 6th Grade, Gym, and Elective hallways: 4:23 PM
  • 7th Grade hallway: 4:24 PM
  • 8th Grade hallway: 4:25 PM

This same staggered format will be followed on Wednesdays, with dismissal times adjusted accordingly due to the early release schedule.

Again, parent procedures do not change and are not impacted by this update. We appreciate your continued support as we prioritize student safety and supervision.

DJMS MTSS & F.I.R.E. Wednesdays

We would like to take a moment to explain an important instructional support system used at DJMS called MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) and how it connects to our weekly F.I.R.E. Wednesdays.

What is MTSS?
MTSS is a school-wide framework designed to ensure every student receives the support they need to succeed academically and behaviorally. Through MTSS, teachers regularly review student data to identify strengths and areas for growth. Based on this information, students receive targeted instruction and interventions at varying levels (or “tiers”) to help close learning gaps and accelerate progress.

At DJMS:
  • Tier 1 is high-quality instruction provided to all students during regular classroom lessons.
  • Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports provide additional, targeted instruction for students who need extra help.

What is F.I.R.E. Wednesday?
To strengthen our MTSS approach, DJMS hosts a weekly intervention day called F.I.R.E. Wednesday

On Wednesdays:
  • Teachers do not introduce new Tier 1 content
  • Instruction is based on student assessment data and classroom performance
  • Students relearn weak standards or skills
  • Teachers work in small groups or one-on-one sessions
  • Some students may receive enrichment activities if they are on track

This dedicated time allows teachers to personalize instruction and ensure students fully understand key concepts before moving forward.

F.I.R.E. Wednesdays are a powerful tool that help us close learning gaps, strengthen skills, and support every student’s success.

PBIS @ DJMS

January

At Denn John Middle School, we believe that positive behaviors should be recognized and celebrated. That’s why we use the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) framework to help students grow not only academically, but also socially and emotionally.

Our PBIS values are represented by F.I.R.E.:
  • Focused – Staying on task and giving your best effort.
  • Integrity – Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
  • Respect – Treating yourself, others, and property with care.
  • Engaged in Learning – Actively participating in lessons and school activities.
Students are rewarded with Dragon Dollars when they show these values in action. Each month, students can use their Dragon Dollars to participate in exciting school events and activities. This not only motivates students but also reinforces the importance of good behavior and strong character.

Thank you, parents, for supporting us in encouraging students to live out our values each day! Together, we are building a school culture where #LearningIsRequired and Dragons thrive.

At Home Support

Here's how you can help:

Parents play a powerful role in helping students develop strong, healthy goal-setting habits. Here are practical and supportive ways families can reinforce goal setting at home:

1. Help Set Clear, Realistic Goals
Work with your child to set specific and achievable goals (academic, behavioral, or personal). Instead of “do better in math,” help them identify goals like “complete all Mathia work each week” or “raise my quiz score by 10%.”

2. Break Big Goals into Small Steps
Large goals can feel overwhelming. Help your child break them into manageable steps and create a simple plan for how and when they will work toward each step.

3. Encourage Reflection and Self-Monitoring
Have regular check-ins where your child reflects on:
  • What is going well?
  • What is challenging?
  • What adjustments can be made?
  • This builds responsibility and self-awareness.

4. Celebrate Effort and Progress
Recognize effort, persistence, and improvement, not just final outcomes. Celebrating small wins helps students stay motivated and builds confidence.

5. Create a Routine and Dedicated Work Time
Consistent routines help students stay focused. Set aside a specific time and quiet space for schoolwork, goal tracking, and reflection.

6. Model Goal-Setting at Home
Share your own goals and how you work toward them. When students see adults setting and adjusting goals, they learn that growth is a continuous process.

7. Reinforce a Growth Mindset
Remind your child that challenges are part of learning. Encourage phrases like:
  • “I can improve with practice.”
  • “Mistakes help me learn.”
  • At DJMS, we believe #LearningIsRequired, and growth happens through effort and perseverance.
