Welcome 6th Grade Parents

Welcome 6th Grade Parents to Middle School!

Welcome to DJMS – where #LearningIsRequired!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to welcome you and your child to 6th grade at DJMS! This transition into middle school is an important step in your child’s educational journey, and we’re honored to walk it with you. Whether you're new to middle school or a returning parent, we want you to feel informed, supported, and connected.

At DJMS, we believe that parent involvement is essential for student success. This year, we invite you to partner with us every step of the way.

What to Expect in Middle School

Middle school brings more independence, increased academic expectations, and exciting new opportunities. Students will be adjusting to:

  • Multiple teachers and class transitions

  • PE locker use and building navigation

  • More responsibility for assignments and time management

  • A growing social environment and extracurricular involvement

We’re here to help every student succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally.

DJMS Daily Schedule & Campus Info

School Hours:

  • Doors Open at 9:00 AM – This is the earliest time students may arrive on campus. Supervision begins at this time.

  • School Starts: 9:30 AM

  • Dismissal: 4:25 PM

Car Rider Pickup Deadline:

  • We kindly ask that car riders be picked up by 5:00 PM. This allows our staff to safely supervise all students until they’re picked up.

Meals at DJMS

Free Meals for All Students!
Every DJMS student receives free breakfast and lunch daily.

  • Breakfast Time: 9:00 AM – 9:25 AM

  • 6th Grade students eat breakfast on the outdoor patio.

  • Students must arrive early to take advantage of breakfast before classes begin.

DJMS Logistics for Arrival & Dismissal

Car Rider Line:

  • Use the front of the school for drop-off and pickup.

  • Please pull all the way up past the gym to help reduce traffic and ensure a smooth process.

  • Students should exit and enter vehicles from the passenger side only.

Bus Loop:

  • Located on the right side of the building (facing the school).

  • This area is for buses only. Please do not enter this loop for drop-off or pickup.

Student Check-Out Guidelines:

  • Please avoid checking out students during 4th period, which includes rotating lunches. Retrieving a student during this time may cause significant delays.

  • No checkouts are allowed within 45 minutes of dismissal (after 3:40 PM) to avoid disruption to end-of-day procedures.

Supporting Academic Success at Home

Your involvement at home makes a powerful impact on your child’s school success. Here’s how you can support them:

Daily Reading:

  • Ensure your student reads at least 30 minutes every day. This strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence.

Establish a Homework Routine:

  • Create a distraction-free study area

  • Use planners or digital calendars to keep track of assignments

Monitor Technology Use:

  • Set limits on screen time

  • Keep devices in shared spaces

  • Discuss online safety and digital responsibility

Talk About School:

  • Ask open-ended questions about their day

  • Celebrate effort and progress—not just grades

Encourage Independence:

  • Let your child problem-solve before stepping in

  • Praise organization and time management skills
