Welcome Back!

Dear House of Dragons Community,

As we step into September, we want to wish everyone a Happy Labor Day and extend our heartfelt appreciation for the dedication and hard work you bring to your families and our school community.

At our school, Tier 1 instruction is in full effect, and we are committed to delivering high-quality, standards-based learning experiences every day. Student attendance is essential for success, and we encourage all families to prioritize being present and on time—every day counts!

This year, student engagement is at the heart of our School Improvement Plan. We believe that when students are actively involved in their learning, they thrive academically and socially. To make this vision a reality, parent partnership is not just appreciated—it’s required. Your involvement, support, and communication play a vital role in your child’s success.

Thank you for your continued trust in our school and for being such an important part of our journey. Together, we will make this a year of growth, achievement, and joy for every student.

With F.I.R.E & Gratitude,

DJMS Policies

Transparency: Always!

1. Attendance and Punctuality Matter
Consistent attendance and arriving on time are critical to academic achievement and school culture. The Dean’s Office monitors attendance closely and works with families to address barriers. Every minute in class counts!

2. Behavior Expectations and Support
Our school promotes a safe and respectful learning environment. The Dean’s Office enforces the Code of Conduct and provides restorative practices to help students learn from mistakes and grow. Parent collaboration is essential when addressing behavior concerns.

3. Dress Code Compliance
Adhering to the school’s dress code helps maintain focus and unity. The Dean’s Office appreciates parent support in ensuring students arrive dressed appropriately and ready to learn.

4. Positive Reinforcement and Recognition
We celebrate students who demonstrate leadership, kindness, and responsibility. The Dean’s Office partners with teachers to recognize positive behavior through incentives and shout-outs. Parents can reinforce these values at home.

5. Open Communication with Families
The Dean’s Office is here to support—not just discipline. We encourage parents to reach out with concerns, questions, or suggestions. Strong communication builds trust and helps us work together to support every child.

Academic Corner

Success in the classroom starts with preparation—and that means having the right materials every single day.

One of the most important tools your child needs is their school-issued laptop. In today’s learning environment, the laptop is the new textbook—just like the ones we carried back in the day. Without it, students cannot access essential online platforms, assignments, and resources that are part of their daily instruction.

In addition to technology, students in ELA and Science classes use interactive notebooks to capture learning, reflect on concepts, and build academic skills. These notebooks are not optional—they are a vital part of the learning process and must be brought to class every day.

We ask for your support in helping students:
  • Charge their laptops nightly and bring them to school daily
  • Keep their interactive notebooks organized and accessible
  • Maintain a backpack or binder system that supports daily readiness

Safety

Safety & Security

We ask parents to take time to speak with their children—especially our walkers—about important safety habits.

Please remind your child:
  • Never speak to strangers or accept rides, gifts, or help from anyone they do not know.
  • Stay on designated walking routes and avoid shortcuts through isolated areas.
  • Walk with a buddy whenever possible.
  • Report any unusual or uncomfortable situations immediately to a trusted adult or school staff member.

Bike Riders:
  • Having a bike lock protects from theft and unintentional situations. Please ensure all bike riders have a lock (always)!

Testing

We’re excited to share that testing operations are going very well! Thank you to all families for ensuring students were present and prepared—our attendance rates on testing days have been outstanding, and it’s making a real difference.

Early data and performance trends are showing major improvement, which is a direct result of our students’ effort, your support, and our staff’s dedication. We’re proud of the momentum we’re building together!

We also want to thank you for:
  • Honoring our dress down guidelines—especially avoiding pajamas, which helps maintain a focused testing environment.
  • Ensuring students brought their laptops and chargers—these tools are essential for accessing online assessments and academic platforms.

Your partnership continues to be a key factor in our success. Let’s keep the energy high and the expectations strong as we move forward!

As an extra incentive, any student who scores a Level 2 or higher on any PM 1 test will receive a free dress-down wristband to celebrate their achievement!

PBIS @ DJMS

Sept Calendar
At Denn John Middle School, we believe in creating a positive and supportive learning environment where students are recognized for making good choices. We use PBIS—Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports—as our schoolwide approach to teach and encourage positive behavior. PBIS focuses on clear expectations, consistent routines, and recognizing students when they meet or exceed those expectations.

One way we celebrate positive behavior is through our Dragon Dollars system. When students follow school rules, show respect, work hard, or go above and beyond, teachers and staff can award them Dragon Dollars. Students can save these to redeem in the school store for fun rewards or use them to participate in special Friday events. It’s our way of making good behavior rewarding and fun—because at DJMS, we know that positive actions deserve recognition! #Learning is required and Dragons breathe F.I.R.E.!

At Home Support

Academic success begins with emotional well-being. As parents and caregivers, your role in nurturing your child’s emotional intelligence is just as important as helping with homework.
Here are a few powerful ways you can support your student at home:

  • Talk About Feelings: Encourage your child to express how they feel—whether it’s excitement, frustration, or anxiety. Help them name their emotions and understand that all feelings are valid.
  • Model Calm and Resilience: Children learn by watching. Show them how to handle stress, disappointment, and conflict with patience and problem-solving.
  • Teach Empathy and Respect: Discuss the importance of kindness, listening to others, and seeing things from different perspectives. These skills help build strong relationships at school and beyond.
  • Create a Safe Space: Make home a place where your child feels heard, supported, and loved. This emotional safety gives them the confidence to take risks and grow academically.
  • Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results: Praise your child for trying hard, staying focused, and bouncing back from setbacks. This builds a growth mindset and long-term motivation.

By teaching emotional intelligence at home, you’re helping your child become not only a better student—but a stronger, more compassionate person. Thank you for being a steady source of love and guidance.
